Lash lift vs lash extensions

How a lash lift and lash extensions differ, who each suits, and how the upkeep compares.

Both services make your eyes look more open and awake, but they do it in completely different ways. If you are trying to decide between a lash lift and lash extensions, this is how I explain it.

The core difference

A lash lift works with your own lashes. They are curled and lifted from the root, and nothing is added. Extensions add something: a synthetic lash attached to each of your natural lashes for length, darkness and fullness. A lift changes the direction of what you have. Extensions change how much there is.

Think of it as a haircut versus hair extensions. A lift improves what is already there, and extensions add to it. Neither one is better. They are two different answers to the question of how you want your lashes to look.

What a lash lift does

A lift sets your lashes in a curl, so they point up and away from the eye instead of straight out or down. It looks like you used a lash curler, only the curl stays in place. My Lash Lift is $115 and takes about 30 minutes. If your lashes are light, I can add a tint for more depth with a Lash Lift & Tint, $140 and about 45 minutes.

What extensions do

Extensions add length, darkness and, depending on the style, fullness. A Classic Full Set puts one extension on each natural lash. A Mixed Full Set blends in volume-style extensions for more fullness. I compare those two in classic vs mixed lash sets explained.

Upkeep compared

A lift is the lower-maintenance option. There are no fills, and you rebook when you want the curl refreshed as your lashes grow out. Extensions need regular fills, every 2-3 weeks, and a bit more care at home: oil-free cleanser, no mascara, no curlers.

Day to day, a lift is easy. You brush your lashes out and go. After the first 24 hours, you can wear mascara if you like, though I suggest skipping waterproof formulas while your lift is in. Extensions ask more of you, but in exchange you wake up with a finished look and no mascara to apply or remove.

Who each one suits

A lift might be for you if:

  • you like your natural lashes
  • you want a simple routine
  • you like to wear mascara some days and nothing others

Extensions might be for you if:

  • you want more length or fullness than your own lashes give
  • you want a defined look without mascara
  • you are happy with regular maintenance visits

Can you do both?

They do not go together in the same appointment. A lift works on bare natural lashes, so it is one or the other at a time. Some clients switch between the two depending on the season or their schedule.

The first-visit step

Either service starts with a free patch test if you are new, so we know how your skin reacts to the products. If you have allergies or sensitivities, talk to a medical professional before booking.

How to choose

Ask yourself how much time you want to spend on upkeep and how much of a change you want. If you want the lightest-touch option, start with a lift. If you want a bigger change, go with extensions. Tell me what you have in mind and I will point you to the right one. I am in Bothell, by appointment only, and booking is online through Square.

One last point: you do not have to decide forever. Many clients try one and then switch. If you are curious about extensions but nervous about the upkeep, a lift is a low-commitment way to find out how you feel about a more finished lash look. If you have had extensions and want a break, a lift gives your lashes a simple lift during the pause. Either way, you are welcome to message me with questions before you book.

If you wear glasses, work out often, or spend time in steam rooms and pools, a lift can be easier to fit into your life than extensions, though the first 24 hours after any lash service still ask for dry, product-free lashes. Think about your week and your habits when you choose, not only about the look.
